TA day 15: Martinborough to Wellington
Distance 99km, Elevation Gain 574m
Martinborough cafe, the Remutaka Incline, Te Marua dairy pies, HUTT River trail, a surprise on Petone foreshore and a battle into the southerly to Bluebridge ferry terminal then home Sweeeeeet home!
Yet another day of endless treats starting with an early morning breakfast at the only open cafe on the square but unfortunately not a cooked breakfast only granola, which was probably for the best. Flat ride towards the Remutaka range leaving Martinborough at 8am. First up Cross Creek for a breather before tackling the incline. Head down with slight wind assist, soon at the Summit. Another breather then descent to Te Marua and a pie for lunch. Wellington’s welcome home southerly blast was a sweet reminder on your he exposed stretches of the river trail.
A surprise awaited us on Petone’s foreshore at the Settler’s Museum where friends and neighbours welcomed us home with flags, banners, medals, cakes, coffees and handshakes and hugs. What a treat! Half the challenge is now behind us, our welcome surprise gave reflection to what had passed in the last 15 days. Thanks to partners, Simon, Marg, Murray, Darrin, Emma, Mhairi and Pauline oh and also the Allison’s who came the greet us on the trail but we flashed by so fast they missed us!
A quick boat into the southerly on the HUTT Road cycle way (if you can call it that) saw us at the Bluebridge terminal for a pick up and ride home.
A night of bike maintenance, planning the second half, catching up with family and friends. Oh and did I mention home cooking and a glass or two of wine.
