TA day 24: Hokitika to Hari Hari
Distance 78km, Elevation Gain 640m
Great night’s kip at Central Suites in Hokitika. Thanks to Scott and Donna for the warm welcome and the helping hand.
Our first stop was to the Hokitika Cycle and Sports shop for what turned out to be a major re-build of Alastair’s rear hub (on the bike!) so we wandered around the town centre and stopped for breakfast before picking up the bikes and jumping back on the Westcoast Wilderness trail to Ross. The first half of the trail today was mostly in bush so very pleasant riding. The second half into Ross is a very long straight disused railway track turned into the cycle path. One just has to put your head down and grind away.
Not much open in Ross except the store so we stocked up on pies , filled rolls and chippies for a picnic lunch with fellow TAers.
From Ross it was a simple but bumpy ride of 44k to Hari Hari, partly on gravel but mostly state highway 6. Quick photo stop at Lake Ianthe before brushing off the sand flies and the run into Hari Hari where we are accommodated at the Alpine Country Lodge. Great digs and another warm welcome. The pub is about 100m away so must be off for calorie re-load!
