TA day 26: Fox Township to Haast
Distance 122km, Elevation Gain 910m
Rain this morning as we awoke to pack our bags and head for the nearest cafe for breakfast. Mediocre food but we’re not counting calories just bulk, nice coffee though. The rain continued so we had to brace ourselves and leave the cafe.
The roll out of Fox was uneventful however we did pass a couple of fellow TAers with a quick word or a wave. The rain eased an hour later and the sun shone but we could see filthy skies ahead. Sure enough the Westcoast gave us it’s best with a heavy downpour for another hour or so. Totally sodden we made the salmon farm cafe at the halfway point just before lunch.
With more fuel on board and clearing skies we pushed on to our next stop and photo control point at Knights Point famous for its stunning views of the coast and a rather bleak concrete monument erected to commemorate the opening of the Haast highway.
A few hills later and a head wind saw us roll into Haast around 5pm.
Great meal at the local pub, a chat with some Christchchurch farmer on a fishing holiday, a bit of a plan for making sure we had food supplies for tomorrow then it was off to bed 8:30pm
