Day 1 - Adelaide (CBD) to Waikerie SA 202km
Today: 202km
Total: 202km
Phew! Just arrived back in Waikerie, South Australia after being picked up by our support vehicle. Today’s effort 203 kilometres including a tiki tour of Waikerie looking for our digs before continuing on in an attempt to complete our allotted distance for today but we ran out of daylight. Still 200k not a bad effort what!
Our journey started at the Rundell Malls Balls at about 7:30am slightly later than planned but getting ready proved to be a longer task with having to transfer bags to the car park up the road.
Through the streets of Adelaide in rush hour but all going in the other direction thank goodness. Not long the city was behind us and we were attacking the gorge road scenic route.
The Gorge road turned out to be very scenic indeed with steep rock faces precariously close to falling onto the road. A very enjoyable ride as not too steep, just great riding. Gorge road took us into part of the Barossa Valley and Mount Pleasant. Quick stop at the world’s biggest rocking horse before continuing onto the upper plateau which opened up huge vistas and undulating roads. One can see how vast Australia is!
Stopped for lunch at the only eatery open in a place called Sedan, the pub. Actually turned out meal was fantastic and huge (see photos).
Pauline caught up with us here so we chatted about her morning and meeting the son, Zack, of an old friend who now resides in Adelaide.
Sedan left us 90k to push on for Waikerie so off we went. With the helping hand of the gods (old and new) blowing behind us we were soon onto the Sturt highway, the A20 which will be our main road for the next few days. The A20 shoulder was rough indeed. We feel as though we’re shaken to death! We really looked for to smooth sections of seal.
Made it to Waikerie around 4:30 so pretty pleased with that. Body feels ok but we won’t kid anyone, we’re quite knackered!
