Day 2 - Waikerie to Mildura NSW 230km
Today: 230km
Total: 432km
Our longest ride ever individually. A day when we crossed two state borders, saw an orange that was a lemon in Berri, where we saw what must have been the world’s biggest winery, when we ate flies for lunch and Andy is cooked.
Off to an early start today to get to the location where we stopped yesterday for sunrise. Heaps of traffic on the roads with roadies (road trains) and longies (long vehicles) wizzing past at 110kph. Actually wasn’t too bad as we had a nice wide and smoothish shoulder once we entered Victoria. Roads were endlessly straight so was quite exciting when we had a bend to contend with.
Unfortunately travellers seem to want to discard their rubbish so much so that there’s litter everywhere! The place we stopped for lunch was like an open toilet so we spent much time waving at flies before they ate us!
First stop was to be the Big Orange at Berri, a tourist attraction but it was pretty disappointing so renamed a lemon.
Second stop as mentioned above was at the notional halfway point, 120k. Next stop a further 50k down the road before the final push to Mildura. Sam and I both missed the motel turn off by 4k so we decided to continue until we could go no further in an effort to make up yesterday’s deficit. We’re meant to be cycling 220k per day! We made up a little but that extra pretty much cooked Andy.
So here we are in Mildura a pretty huge town/city in the middle of nowhere. Motel is fine if dated but who cares as long as it has a shower and a bed!
Another early night methinks.
